As this autoposts, I’m wending my way northwards to Toronto for the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, this Saturday and Sunday. There I’ll be selling all manner of my own books and prints, and will be on hand to sign copies of Nobrow #8, which will be debuting there. I’m very proud of my story “H.”, the last panel of which you see here. It’s a weird little thing, equal parts fussy and manic, in keeping with the theme of the book, “hysteria.” If you can’t make it to TCAF, you can preorder it here.

I’ll have the 16 original pieces of art that comprise the 40 panels of the story for sale, and I expect/hope that they’ll go quickly, so I would suggest hunting me down on Saturday rather than Sunday. Also on Sunday afternoon I’ll be interviewing Nao of Brown author Glyn Dillon as part of the festival, so mark your calendars accordingly. Wish me luck!

JIM GUTHRIE’s new album Takes Time premieres today, and...

JIM GUTHRIE’s new album Takes Time premieres today, and it’s fantastic. You can order it (and/or stream it free) on Bandcamp (which presumably nets him more moola) and iTunes. I was able to get an advance copy and have worn electronic grooves in the mp3’s for the last few months: it’s really something. I discovered Jim’s music through the incredible Sworcery soundtrack, and then immediately started working back through his catalog. Now More Than Ever is an especial favorite, and his last solo studio album, nearly ten years old. I can’t recommend Jim as a person or as an artist highly enough—his music has become a really really important part of my life, and I’m the better for it.

The above comic is from a future series of diary comics, which I thought I’d have done by now, but no. But I couldn’t help sticking it out there to celebrate Jim’s new album, and hopefully drum up some new fans for him. Pass it along!

WHAT THE RAVEN QUOTH. An “Hour Drawing,” available...

WHAT THE RAVEN QUOTH. An “Hour Drawing,” available to purchase here, and the 200+ set of them so far here. I’m going to be doing a summer correspondence...

comicsworkbook:

I’m going to be doing a summer correspondence course. The focus will be on advancing your understanding of layouts, color, contour line drawing, and printmaking for producing comic books. The 8-week class is $500. Payment plans available. This class is limited: only ten students will be accepted.

Who the hell am I? I’ve been drawing comics since 1988 – and writing about comics since 1995. I’ve taught drawing at Parsons. My work has been exhibited at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York and the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. I have worked as an assistant to fine arts painters such as Francesco Clemente, Dorothea Rockburne and Gary Panter. Many of my paintings are in the collection of Bruno Bischofberger. My comic Storeyville is, allegedly, one of Chris Ware’s favorites. I’ve collaborated with Ben Jones. I was in a drawing contest against the French master Blutch – and it was deemed a tie! I have appeared in two volumes of Kramers Ergot. I am working with Dash Shaw on an animation project. I worked for the silkscreen wizard Frank Kozik. I am friends with Yuichi Yokoyama. I got into a yelling match with Brian Chippendale because I’m against photo-referencing. Jaime Hernandez taught me where all the freeways meet in Los Angeles. Gilbert Hernandez said my comic Pompeii was “pretty good”.

Application guidelines:

-3 figure drawings done on 3 x 5 index cards

-3 landscape drawings done on 3 x 5 index cards

-3 still life drawings done on 3 x 5 cards

-specific url links to any comics work you have done.

Applications due by June 1st. Email me - capneasyATgmailDOTcom - and I will send you an invite to the course blog so you see what it’s like. Check out my “Layout Workbook” series over at The Comics Journal. Overseas students welcome. Payment plans available - I will work with you to make it affordable. Thanks! -Frank Santoro

Frank is the best. I don’t know how his brain is wired up like that, but it’s wired up pretty good. I’ve come close to taking this class before, but I’ve never had the time. If you have the time, take it and let’s mind meld afterwards.

H.: Birds, Birds

I was about to go approve the proofs for this new giclee print I’m doing, but my truck won’t start. *sound of me trying to start it for 30 minutes* Sales on this print have been slow, which is not your fault. But if you were thinking of getting one and were on the fence, or just would like something colorful for your wall, something made by a 38 year old man who I guess is going to have some auto bills in his future, something that’s taken from a story that he’s very proud of, though it was painful to make… well this is your chance!

And don’t forget that I’m having a sale until Monday morning, meaning you can enter discount code SPRING during checkout and get 30% off this and anything else in my store you’d like, as long as you hit a $20 minimum. Thanks in advance for your orders, and if you don’t feel inclined, feel free to share and that’s good too. Or, do nothing at all: you’ve earned it!

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY. This Saturday, May 4, I’ll be a guest at Heroes Aren’t Hard To Find’s Free Comic Book Day extravaganza. It’s going to be, frankly, bananas, with over 20 artists signing autographs and doing sketches, including guys like Brian Stelfreeze, Adam Hughes, and Tony Harris, who I know from experienced are going to have super heavy duty lines.

SO if you’re in the Charlotte area Saturday, drop by between 1 and 5 and get a free sketch from me! They’ll be on a little 4.25” x 5.5” piece of cardstock, as pictured above, and will be probably in ink and watercolor, depending on how many people are waiting behind you. No charge, although I may have a few prints for sale, depending on how cheeky I’m feeling, and I’ll definitely have a tip jar.

Full details here at Heroes’ FB page, and a list of all the free comic books—remember the free comic books?—you can get here on their site.

emmanuellewalker:

The Hic & Hoc Illustrated Journal of Humor Volume 1
Edited by Lauren Barnett and Nathan Bulmer
64 Pages
Published by Hic & Hoc
Debuting at TCAF 2013!

Edited by ambulatory laff factories Lauren Barnett (Me Likes You Very Much) and Nathan Bulmer (Eat More Bikes), the first volume of an anticipated 196 volume series of the best of funny comics throughout the world features the likes of Phil McAndrew, Box Brown, Madéleine Flores, Zac Gorman, KC Green, Dustin Harbin, Jane Mai, Dakota McFadzean, Matt Wiegle, and Joe Lambert, who did the stunning cover! Oh hey as it turns out all of those people will be at TCAF! Weird.

I am in this! And I will be at TCAF! And I will draw fart clouds in your copy at no extra cost! What a savings!

H.: Mantis, Dung Beetle

Preview from my four-page story in the upcoming Nobrow #8, “Hysteria,” available for preorder now. I’ll be running two panels a day over the next month, leading up to its release at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival.

THE GOD WARRIOR. An “Hour Drawing,” available to...

THE GOD WARRIOR. An “Hour Drawing,” available to purchase here, and the 200+ set of them so far here. Subject suggestion for this one was “Totoro/anything Studio Ghibli”. I went with the latter, although possibly the direct opposite from “Totoro.”

I’ll be reopening sales on these drawings, at a slightly increased price, on Monday, May 6. So if you’ve been waiting, get ready—in order to control demand (and workload), I’ll only be taking 10 orders.

Also this week I launched this new print, along with a week long sale.

BOXES. A new <strike>14” x 8.5”</strike> [EDIT: printer problems have changed this to a 12” x 9”] giclee print, now up for presell, which will last until Friday, May 3; all prints sold during this time will be part of a numbered edition exclusive to this period—AND they’re part of the sale mentioned below, so while they’re listed at $30, functionally they’re $21 during the presell.

Prints sold after that time will be part of a small unnumbered quantity debuting at TCAF. If you’d like to purchase a numbered print to pick up in person at TCAF, place your order as normal and then email me at dustyATdharbinDOTcom and I’ll refund your shipping costs and bring that mother right to you, along with anything else included in the order.

SPEAKING of orders, I’ll be running a spring-cleaning sale all week in my store, ending at 9am on Monday, May 6. Enter SPRING under discount code to get 30% off any order of $20 or more. That sale includes the above print! And pretty much everything else except the original drawing items, which will return once the sale has ended (and I’m caught up on orders, fingers crossed) also this Monday.

ANYWAY, the print—remember the print—is a redrawn version of 3 pages from the middle of my story “Boxes”, which is of all the things I’ve done creatively, the one I’m most proud of, though it’s pretty personal and more than half bleak. If you haven’t read it before, all 38 pages are up on my site, and it’s the last half of Diary Comics #4, which is available here and will be 30% off as long as you spend at least $20 in my sale—remember the sale?

H.: Possum, Mouse
