SKETCHBOOK 07 - pages 10-11
I sat down and copied a bunch of heads and figures from the excellent Incidents In The Night, the new David B. book from Uncivilized Books, and then would use them as inking warmups over the next few days. David B. is one of my very favorite cartoonists—not only is his work gorgeous, thought-provoking, etc., but because of its subject matter—often dreams and legends—his use of abstraction, iconography, all that cartooning stuff is very tightly, inextricably woven into the fabric of his stories. It’s one of those things where you remember that comics is its own artform, and that trying to unravel word and image is a waste of time, because the connection—when a comic really is working as a comic, rather than an illustrated story—goes so much deeper than that. The right hand and the left hand working as one hand, with one purpose. Anyway. The book is great, and you should definitely buy it direct from the publisher right here.
Left side drawn with a nib (Brause 361 and Hunt 108) and Dr Ph Martins Black Star ink. Right side drawn mainly with pencils and Staedtler Triplus color markers, and some pan watercolor. Sketchbook measures 6” x 7.5” and was handmade by the great Joe Lambert.
